Short answer: an iPhone 18 getting warm while recording video is normal, and recording is one of the heaviest things you can ask a phone to do. The camera and image processor work continuously, the picture is encoded and compressed in real time, the file is written to storage throughout, and the screen stays lit — so heat accumulates, which is why a long take is far warmer than a short clip. Higher resolution and frame rates raise the load further.
When the phone gets properly hot, iOS lowers brightness and limits performance, and in extreme heat it may pause parts of the camera or interrupt recording. That is self-protection, not damage.
Why recording runs far hotter than a photo
A photo is a short burst; a recording is a flat-out run:
- The camera pipeline never stops. The sensor and image processor handle every frame, including noise reduction and stabilisation work.
- Video encoding runs continuously. Compressing the stream into a file takes sustained compute, and higher quality settings raise that load.
- Data is written to storage the whole time. Recording keeps the storage busy, and reading and writing add their own heat.
- The screen stays on. The display is a major heat source by itself, and while filming it never sleeps.
- Your hand and the case insulate it. Gripping the body and covering it with a case slows heat escaping.

A new phone runs hotter still
In the first days after setup or a restore, the system is still rebuilding search indexes, analysing photos and syncing iCloud. Those jobs keep running while you film, so the load stacks and thermal limits arrive earlier. Apple's guidance for heat and drain after an update is that it normally settles within about 72 hours, and a new phone's first setup is the same. Practical ways to keep it cooler
In rough order of effectiveness:
- Record in shorter takes. One long take and several shorter ones are not the same thermal story. Splitting important footage into pieces also means a thermal interruption costs you less.
- Drop the settings a notch. Lowering resolution or frame rate cuts encoding and storage load directly. Everyday footage rarely needs the highest setting.
- Do not charge while recording. It is one of the hottest combinations. Charge first, then record — and if you must charge while filming, use a cable, because wireless adds conversion loss.
- Case off, out of the sun, out of your palm. Move into shade, avoid wrapping your hand around the body, and do not film from under a duvet.

- Start cool. A phone that just finished a game or a charge is already warm. Let it cool first and you push the dimming point much later.
When it is actually a problem
Lines you can check yourself:
- the phone is already cool, yet a few minutes of ordinary-quality recording makes it hot to the touch or triggers a temperature warning quickly;

- more than a week past the settling period, the same settings and the same length of clip now interrupt or dim noticeably more than before, with no improving trend;
- recording also drains the battery unusually fast, in which case check the battery list under
Settings → Batteryto see whether the camera or something else is responsible.
If any of those apply, try a force restart (press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears), make sure iOS and your camera apps are up to date, and check storage headroom.
