Five or six GB free, yet the system says "not enough storage" and the update won't install — that is not a display bug. What the iPhone checks is whether a large contiguous block can be freed for temporary use. The remaining-number is just the ledger.
Why "a few GB left" is not enough
Several critical operations temporarily borrow big blocks of space:
- System updates — the OTA package is downloaded, then unpacked locally before system files are swapped in. The process needs roughly 2–3x the package size in temporary space — a 6GB package may ask for 15GB of headroom first
- Virtual memory (swap) — when RAM runs short, the system writes parts of memory to disk temporarily, and that space must be available on demand
- Temporary files — photo processing, app installation and unpacking, and iCloud sync all leave temporary copies on disk
When space is short, these operations fail outright rather than slowing down — which is why the symptom is a flat "can't install," "can't update," or even the camera refusing to shoot.
How much headroom each capacity tier should keep
| Device capacity | Keep free long term | Free at least before an update |
|---|---|---|
| 64 GB | 8 GB+ | 12 GB |
| 128 GB | 13–15 GB | 18 GB |
| 256 GB | 20–25 GB | 25 GB |
| 512 GB and up | 30 GB | 30 GB |
Check current free space: Settings > General > iPhone Storage. For why low headroom slows everything down, see Why Storage Space Affects Speed.
Self-check: where are you stuck
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Update says not enough space | Not enough room to unpack | Free up to the "before an update" line above |
| Camera says not enough space | Temp files can't be written | Export photos first, then shoot |
| App won't install or update | Not enough space to unpack | Offload one or two big apps, retry |
| Warning appears out of nowhere | Abnormal System Data growth | See What Is System Data |
What you can do now: quick space-freeing moves
- Offload unused apps (not delete): Offloading removes only the app itself while keeping its documents and data — fast, and it reinstalls anytime.
Settings > General > iPhone Storage > tap an app > Offload App - Export photos and videos: turn on Optimize iPhone Storage for iCloud Photos (
Settings > Photos), or export to a computer and delete locally - Delete offline downloads in video and music apps: offline episodes and downloaded songs are the fastest temporary space source
- Clear messaging-app cache:
Me > Settings > General > Storagein WeChat often frees several GB
Once the update completes, the borrowed temporary space returns on its own — no extra cleanup needed.
If you are freeing space by hand every time, the capacity was too small. Subscribing to iCloud+ (Settings > [your name] > iCloud) and moving photos and videos there is the most carefree long-term answer for a 128GB model.
