Short answer: an iPhone 18 getting warm while charging is usually normal. Charging is an energy conversion — the adapter turns AC into DC, the phone steps the voltage down and feeds the battery — and every step loses some energy as heat. More power means more heat per minute, wireless charging adds an electromagnetic conversion step and runs hotter than a cable, and gaming while charging stacks both sources.
A new phone adds one more layer: background indexing, photo analysis and iCloud sync are already keeping the processor busy. The case worth taking seriously is a phone that is cool and idle, then gets hot to the touch soon after you plug it in, with the screen dimming on its own or charging pausing repeatedly.
Why charging always produces heat
Charging is not pouring water into a tank; it is a chain of conversions, and each link loses a little energy:
- Higher power, more heat per minute. Fast charging is most obvious in the early stretch, when the battery is relatively empty.
- Wireless runs hotter. Inductive charging adds a conversion step and is less efficient than a cable, so the pad and the phone both warm up.
- Charging while using stacks. Charging heat plus processor heat is the hottest everyday combination; gaming on a wireless pad is close to the worst case.
- Cases and soft surfaces trap it. A thick case, a duvet, a pillow or a sunlit car all slow heat leaving the body.

Why a new iPhone charges hotter in the first days
In the first days after setup or a restore, the system is rebuilding search indexes, analysing photos, syncing iCloud and re-downloading and re-adapting apps. Those jobs keep the processor busy for long stretches, so the body is already warm; plug in a charger and the two heat sources add up.
This is part of the settling period, and it is also the best time to charge: background jobs hate running while the battery drains, so charging on Wi-Fi lets indexing and syncing finish sooner. Apple's guidance for heat and drain after an update is that it normally settles within about 72 hours, and a new phone's first setup behaves the same way. Judge it by trend, exactly as in New iPhone heat and drain in the first days.
How to keep charging cooler
No accessories required — a few habits do the work:
- Unplug when it is hot to the touch. Let it cool, then charge again. This is worth more than any battery-care trick.
- Take the case off and move it somewhere ventilated. Not under a pillow, not in a duvet, not on a sunlit car seat.
- Keep heavy use on a cable. If you want to play a big game or record video while charging, a cable runs much cooler than a pad.
- Confirm Optimized Battery Charging is on. Under
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging, it learns your routine and slows charging past roughly eighty percent, so the battery spends less time held at full charge under stress. - Leave overnight charging alone. Plug in before bed and unplug in the morning; that is the scenario iOS manages best, and there is no need to time it manually.
When it is actually a problem
Lines you can check yourself, so you are not left guessing:
- the phone is already cool with the screen off, yet becomes hot to the touch soon after you plug it in;
- the screen dims on its own while charging, or the lock screen repeatedly shows a charging-paused message — that is thermal protection stepping in;
- swapping the cable or the adapter changes the heat noticeably, which points at the accessory (prefer the original or certified parts);
- the settling period is over by more than a week and every charge still runs this hot, with the battery curve getting worse at the same time.
If any of those apply, check battery health and work through iPhone 18 battery drain, then have Apple look at it if nothing changes. Before that, separate the heat of charging from the heat the settling period is adding on top.
