Short answer: fast battery drain on an iPhone 18 is not automatically a faulty phone. In the first days after first setup or a backup restore, the system is rebuilding indexes, analysing photos, syncing iCloud and re-downloading and re-adapting your apps. Warm and power-hungry is the expected settling period, and it normally levels off within a few days. What actually deserves your attention is drain that is still obvious after that window — and then three checks, in order, usually name the app responsible: battery usage, Background App Refresh, and Location Services.
Settling period, or a real problem?
There is really only one dimension to judge by: time.
| What you see | Verdict | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1–3 after setup or a restore: faster drain, body slightly warm | Normal settling | Change nothing, just use it |
| Still clearly draining after a week or more | Needs a check | Work through the three steps below |
| Draining even on standby, with one app eating a wild share | Probably a single app | Go straight to step ① |
How long settling takes depends heavily on how much data you have. More photos, messages and mail means a heavier indexing and sync job, so "my friend was fine in a day and I am still warm on day three" is common rather than alarming. For the full mechanism, see Why is my phone hot and draining after a system update?.
Three checks, starting with the usage list
① Find the offending app. Open Settings → Battery and look at the last 24 hours. The top entry is your suspect — especially when its on-screen time and its share of drain do not match (ten minutes of use eating a large slice of the battery is a red flag). The point of this step is to replace guessing with data instead of blaming whichever app you happen to dislike.
② Tighten Background App Refresh. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh and keep only chat and mail apps. Turning the rest off does not delay notifications — pushes travel over Apple's system-level push service, a separate mechanism. The trade-offs are covered in What is Background App Refresh?.
③ Rein in location access. In Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, switch apps that do not need live location to While Using. Location is frequently a bigger consumer than background refresh, particularly for apps that keep requesting your position in the background.
If the curve is still wrong after all three, do a force restart — press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. It clears stuck background processes.
Long-term battery care: change settings, not habits
The durable fix is not babysitting the battery every day — it is letting iOS manage it:
- Optimized Battery Charging. Turn it on under
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. It learns your routine and slows charging past roughly eighty percent, so the battery spends less time held at full charge under stress. This is a built-in long-term care feature, not a trick. - Low Power Mode on demand. Use it when you are low or away from a charger, then switch it off. Leaving it on permanently costs background activity and polish, so it is a bad default; see Does Low Power Mode actually save battery?.
- Glance at Battery Health.
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Chargingshows Maximum Capacity. If it has dropped noticeably, both drain and lag get amplified, and the honest answer at that point is a battery replacement rather than more settings. See What is Battery Health? The 80% threshold.
When it is actually a problem
Concrete lines you can check yourself, so you do not over-worry:
- after the settling window (usually a few days, at most about a week), losing more than 15% overnight on standby (roughly eight hours);
- Battery Health below 80%, after which iOS limits peak performance and amplifies both drain and stutter;
- a body that is hot to the touch rather than warm, together with the screen frequently dimming or the phone stuttering — that is thermal protection throttling, not a plain battery story. Start with Is iPhone 18 overheating normal? and Why do phones get hot?.
If any of those apply, then look further: erase and reinstall, or have the battery checked. Before that, let the settling period finish.
