Why Does Storage Space Affect Speed? What Happens Below 10% Free

The lag of a nearly full iPhone works differently: every action has to make room first. Unlike load-based lag it doesn't come with heat, and unlike throttling lag a restart won't fix it — the signal lives on the progress bar in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.

Free space is the system's scratch paper

Everything iOS does borrows disk space temporarily: app switching saves state, the camera writes RAW intermediates, system updates download and unpack, and apps write cache.

Think of storage as a desk: the fuller the desk, the longer the cleanup before any real work. With plenty of free space the system just writes; below 10% free, it has to tidy up before every single task — so everything slows down. The CPU waits on the disk, and waiting burns power and adds heat for nothing.

1. Photos and videos (usually the biggest chunk)

Can I clean up System Data?
