System Data (called "Other" in older iOS versions) can eat up anywhere from a few gigabytes to tens of them, and it looks alarming. Here is the short version: most of it is a byproduct of normal operation — caches, logs, offline media — which the system reclaims on its own. The only situation that calls for action is abnormal growth that doesn't come back down.
What is actually inside System Data
Apple does not publish an itemized list of this category, but from largest to smallest it is typically:
- System and app caches — Safari web cache, apps' temporary files, streaming playback buffers
- Logs and diagnostic files — system activity records, crash reports
- Offline media — downloaded music, podcasts, and offline maps (sometimes counted under the app instead)
- App-container leftovers — document fragments left behind by uninstalled apps, failed update packages
- System update leftovers — downloaded-but-not-installed OTA update packages
Why it grows, and why you "can't clean it"
These files share one trait: they grow as you use the phone — an hour of video means a chunk of new cache. iOS is designed to reclaim the oldest, coldest caches when space runs tight — so a "large" System Data in a normal state is harmless.
The reason you cannot clean it manually: the files sit deep inside the system sandbox, and Apple deliberately gives neither you nor third-party apps a direct way in. That is a security design, not an oversight.
How much is normal: a self-check table

Four safe cleanup steps (lowest risk first)
- Restart — triggers the system to reclaim some temporary files. Safest step; do this first
- Offload and reinstall apps with abnormally large Documents & Data — tap into apps in the storage list; video and messaging apps are the usual cache hogs. Offloading removes local cache while your account data comes back from the cloud (back up chat history first)
- Clear caches from inside big apps — WeChat:
Me > Settings > General > Storage; video apps have a Downloads list. These are the real cache heavyweights - The last resort: back up, erase, and restore —
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, after confirming your iCloud or computer backup is complete, then restore from that backup. For stubborn tens-of-GB System Data, this is the only reliable fix
The iOS sandbox means a third-party app can only delete its own cache — it cannot reach anyone else's files. So a "one-tap system junk cleanup" either cleans only itself or is simply overselling. Save the money; put it toward iCloud storage instead.
