What Is "System Data" (Formerly "Other") and Why Does It Take Up Tens of GB?

Bottom line: System Data is not junk files — it is caches, logs, offline media, and app-container leftovers that iOS reclaims automatically. Anything from a few GB to a dozen-plus GB is common. Only abnormal growth (tens of GB and climbing) needs action — back up, erase, and restore is the most effective fix.

System Data (called "Other" in older iOS versions) can eat up anywhere from a few gigabytes to tens of them, and it looks alarming. Here is the short version: most of it is a byproduct of normal operation — caches, logs, offline media — which the system reclaims on its own. The only situation that calls for action is abnormal growth that doesn't come back down.

These files share one trait: they grow as you use the phone — an hour of video means a chunk of new cache. iOS is designed to reclaim the oldest, coldest caches when space runs tight — so a "large" System Data in a normal state is harmless.

The reason you cannot clean it manually: the files sit deep inside the system sandbox, and Apple deliberately gives neither you nor third-party apps a direct way in. That is a security design, not an oversight.

Four safe cleanup steps (lowest risk first)

  1. Restart — triggers the system to reclaim some temporary files. Safest step; do this first
  2. Offload and reinstall apps with abnormally large Documents & Data — tap into apps in the storage list; video and messaging apps are the usual cache hogs. Offloading removes local cache while your account data comes back from the cloud (back up chat history first)
  3. Clear caches from inside big apps — WeChat: Me > Settings > General > Storage; video apps have a Downloads list. These are the real cache heavyweights
  4. The last resort: back up, erase, and restoreSettings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, after confirming your iCloud or computer backup is complete, then restore from that backup. For stubborn tens-of-GB System Data, this is the only reliable fix
"Cleaner" apps cannot touch System Data on iOS

The iOS sandbox means a third-party app can only delete its own cache — it cannot reach anyone else's files. So a "one-tap system junk cleanup" either cleans only itself or is simply overselling. Save the money; put it toward iCloud storage instead.

Can I reset System Data to zero with one tap?

No, and there is no need. It is mostly caches and logs that the system reclaims on its own. Wiping it manually just makes apps re-download their caches — costing more power and data.

Is 30GB of System Data normal?

On the large side but not rare. Restart first, then offload and reinstall any app with an unusually large Documents & Data footprint, and watch whether it shrinks. If it keeps growing past 40GB with storage warnings, back up, erase, and restore.

Will erasing and restoring lose my data?

No — as long as you complete an iCloud or computer backup first, you restore from it afterward. It is more thorough than any cleaning tool, because it rebuilds the entire file system.
