Short answer: heat and fast drain in a new iPhone's first days are normal, and almost every new phone goes through it. The system is rebuilding search indexes, analysing photos, syncing iCloud and re-downloading and first-running your apps, all of which keeps the processor busy. It is worst on days 1–3 and settles by days 3–7, and how long it takes depends mostly on how much data you migrated and which method you used. Do not make serious judgements about battery life or heat during this window, and do not rush a return or a repair — what actually deserves investigation is heat and drain that are still obvious after a week.
The timeline, day one to day seven
Breaking the settling period into days makes it much easier to read:

Treat this as a trend, not a schedule. Some phones cool down in a day; some are still slightly warm on day seven. Both are common.
Why the timing varies so much
Two variables decide how long settling takes, and neither says anything about whether your phone is good:
① How much data moved. Photo and video libraries, chat history, mail and messaging apps with many small files take the longest — the photo library gets re-scanned for faces and scenes, and chat history gets re-indexed for search. A library of tens of thousands of photos and a library of a few hundred are not remotely the same job. So "my friend was fine in a day and I am still warm on day five" is common rather than alarming.
② Which migration method you used. The background load is not identical across the three options:
- Quick Start (phone-to-phone). The transfer phase itself runs noticeably hot, but the data moves point-to-point in one go, so the tidying afterwards is comparatively lighter.
- Wired transfer. Usually the fastest, which means a shorter hot phase.
- iCloud restore. The transfer itself may not feel hot, because data comes down from the cloud, but afterwards the phone still has to organise it locally, build indexes and re-download apps — so the following days can carry a heavier background load.

The one thing worth doing this week
After the migration finishes, plug it in, join Wi-Fi and leave it overnight. That single step is worth more than any collection of settings changes:
- background jobs hate running while the battery drains, so charging lets indexing and syncing run at full speed;
- Wi-Fi makes app downloads and iCloud sync faster and keeps them off cellular;
- with the screen off and the phone undisturbed, cooling is at its best and the system works most efficiently.
A few cheap extras: take the thick case off, keep it out of a duvet or a hot car, and go easy on long video recording or big games for a few days. What not to do this week
The settling period is easy to misread, and several things genuinely can wait:
- Do not judge battery life yet. The first days' curve does not represent the long-term one; wait until settling finishes.
- Do not strip out features. Disabling things now only costs you experience — judge after 72 hours.
- Do not rush a return or a repair. Heat and drain in the first days are by design, not a fault; deciding within a week is far too early.
- Do not run heavy benchmarks or stress tests. That just adds heat on purpose and triggers throttling earlier.
When it is actually a problem
A settling period does not make everything normal. These are the lines you can check yourself:
- more than about a week (Apple's guidance is 72 hours, so a week is generous) of obvious heat and drain with no improving trend;
- a body that is hot to the touch, with the screen frequently dimming on its own and clearly stuttery scrolling — classic thermal throttling, judged the same way as in Is iPhone 18 overheating normal?;
- more than 15% lost overnight on standby (roughly eight hours), or unusual heat while charging;
- after a week or more, one app still sitting at the top of
Settings → Battery.
If any of those apply, try a force restart (press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears), make sure every app is up to date, and check whether storage is close to full. If nothing changes, have Apple look at it. Before any of that, let the week finish.
