Battery health is the most common hidden cause behind an older phone that is "hot and laggy." This article covers what it is, how to read it, when to replace it — and most importantly, how it relates to lag.

What battery health is

A battery is a consumable, and its capacity fades with use. Apple measures how much charge it can still hold with Maximum Capacity: a new battery reads 100%; at 85%, one full charge delivers only 85% of the original capacity.

Where to check: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. There is also a Peak Performance Capability line, which tells you directly whether the system is limiting performance.

80% is the threshold

Below 80%, the battery's fully-charged voltage can no longer support the processor running at full speed, so the system deliberately limits performance — lag, heat, and erratic percentage jumps arrive together. This is the truth behind many "my old phone is unusable" complaints: the processor isn't old, the battery just can't feed it. A replacement often brings the phone back to life on the spot.

Apple's official reference: the iPhone 15 battery is designed to retain 80% after 1000 charge cycles — roughly two-plus years at one charge a day. Earlier models were rated at 500 cycles. So "around 85% after two years" is completely normal; no need to panic.

If health is dropping fast, check these three things

Below 80% with noticeable lag and erratic percentage jumps — that is the time. At 79% the system may also show a Service message. If it is just over 80% and you feel no difference, you can wait — the payoff from replacement is about experience, not just the number.

Is it normal for battery health to drop this fast?

Losing 5–10% in a year is within the normal range. Unusually fast decline usually ties back to heat, long-term storage at full charge, or heavy use while charging. Apple's reference: iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% after 1000 charge cycles.

Can I use a third-party battery instead?

A cheap no-name battery is not worth it. Unstable power delivery can trigger a 'cannot verify' battery health warning at best and damage the logic board at worst. Go with Apple or an authorized service provider — quality and warranty are covered.
