Short answer: FPS drops and heat while gaming after an iOS 27 update usually fall into one of two manageable cases — background post-update work competing with the game in the first few days (Apple's September 2026 guidance is that this normally settles within about 72 hours), or thermal throttling once the body gets hot.
The two need opposite responses: the first needs time, the second needs cooling. What they share is that deleting apps and clearing background cards do not fix either, and neither does reinstalling the OS or replacing the phone.
Tell the two kinds of frame drops apart

The key signal is whether the screen dims at the same time. Thermal throttling shows three things together: a clearly hot body, a falling frame rate, and a display that dims itself even with auto-brightness off. Why gaming pushes a phone into throttling
Games are the closest thing to a sustained full load on an iPhone:
- Processor and GPU run flat out for long stretches, with no idle gap to shed heat;
- the screen stays bright, and the display is a major heat source on its own;
- many people play while charging, adding another heat source on top;
- thick cases and magnetic accessories block the body's heat path;
- there is no fan — cooling relies on the body and display radiating heat away.

What to do in the first few days after updating
- Wait out the first 72 hours. Do not conclude that "the new system is slower" inside that window. Background indexing and resource downloads consume meaningful processing capacity;
- Plug in, join Wi-Fi and leave it locked overnight. iOS finishes the background work then, and only after that is gaming performance comparable;

Practical ways to reduce heat and steady the frame rate
- Remove the case and magnetic accessories — easiest and fastest;

- Drop graphics or frame rate one level. 1440p to 1080p, or Extreme down to High, improves both heat and frame-rate stability;

- cool room, not charging, drops from the first minute of a match, everything else fine — more likely that game's adaptation; update it or lower its graphics;
