Short answer: background work after an iOS update normally settles within about 72 hours — that is Apple's guidance. In that window iOS rebuilds Spotlight indexes, analyses photos, re-indexes Mail and Messages, downloads new resources and updates your apps, which is why the phone feels warm, drains faster and occasionally stutters. What really decides the duration is not the OS version but how much data you have — more photos, messages and mail means a longer run.
What the background is actually doing
Once the update installs, the system starts a batch of invisible chores:
- Rebuilding Spotlight indexes so search can find your apps, files and notes again. This is the most CPU-hungry part.
- Photo classification. Face, scene and object recognition run again on-device; the bigger the library, the longer it takes.
- Mail and Messages indexing so old mail and conversations become searchable.
- Downloading new resources — fresh system assets and machine-learning models.
- Updating apps to versions built for the new system.
iOS schedules these at low priority in the background, so they do not pin the processor permanently — but until they finish, the phone runs warm and drains faster. That is why "I am not even using it and it is losing battery".
Why the timing differs so much
The duration is almost entirely a function of data volume:

Still working, or stuck?
Judge by time plus behaviour, never by feel:
- Warm and draining faster within 72 hours: normal. Do nothing, and ideally leave it plugged in so it can finish.
- Well past 72 hours and still hot and draining: start checking. Open
Settings → Battery, look at the last 24 hours, and find any app whose share of drain is out of proportion to its on-screen time. - One app repeatedly on top: limit its background refresh (what Background App Refresh does), and reinstall it if needed.
- Frozen interface or unresponsive screen: do a force restart — see How to force restart a stuck iPhone. It clears stuck background processes.
- Still wrong after the force restart: update to the latest minor version, or back up and reinstall.
When it counts as a real problem
Concrete lines, so you do not read a settling period as a fault:
- more than 15% lost overnight (about eight hours) on standby, well past 72 hours;
- Battery Health below 80% — iOS starts limiting performance earlier, which amplifies both heat and stutter; see What is Battery Health?;
- the body is hot to the touch (not merely warm), with the screen dimming often and visible frame drops — that is thermal protection throttling, see Why does an iPhone get hot?;
- apps crashing repeatedly, or features that simply do not work.
