Short answer: battery draining fast after an iOS 27 update is usually temporary. In September 2026 Apple's guidance was that once the update installs, the system still has to download new resources, update apps and rebuild indexes in the background — work that uses extra CPU and battery, and that normally settles within about 72 hours. Apple also noted you can hold off upgrading if you are worried about the transition. What actually deserves investigation is drain that is still obvious after those 72 hours.

Why an update drains the battery

A major OS update is not a cosmetic change — it is a large background move:

One caveat: how long settling takes depends on how much data you have. More photos, messages and mail means a longer indexing run — so "my friend was fine in a day and I am still warm on day three" is common and not alarming.

The three-step check

① Find the offending app. Open Settings → Battery and look at the last 24 hours. The top entry is your suspect — especially when its on-screen time and its share of drain do not match (ten minutes of use eating thirty percent is a red flag).

② Tighten Background App Refresh. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh and keep only messaging and mail apps. Turning the rest off does not delay notifications — pushes travel over Apple's system-level push service, which is a separate mechanism. See What is Background App Refresh?.

③ Rein in location access. In Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, switch apps that do not need live location to While Using. Location is frequently a bigger consumer than background refresh.
