Short answer: light use while charging is fine. What ages a battery is heat, so the combination to avoid is heavy load plus fast charging in a warm place — not the act of touching the phone.
What actually causes harm
A lithium cell ages from two things: time spent at high charge, and temperature. Using the phone while it charges only matters because both charging and heavy use produce heat.
- Reading, messaging, music: negligible heat. Nothing to worry about.
- Gaming, video calls, navigation, hotspot: the phone is working hard while current flows in. That is when the temperature climbs.
- Charging under a pillow, in a hot car, or in direct sun: the heat has nowhere to go, and that is worse than the workload itself.
Two habits from older battery types do not apply here: there is no memory effect to manage, and deliberately draining to 0% does more harm than good. For the settings side, see battery health and the 80% charging limit.

Download on the App StoreWhen it is fine and when it is not
| Situation | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging or reading on a slow charger | Fine | Barely any heat |
| Video call on a charger, in a normal room | Usually fine | Watch whether the phone gets warm to the touch |
| Gaming or navigation on a fast charger | Avoid if you can | High load plus high current is the worst combination |
| Any of the above under a pillow or in the sun | Avoid | Heat cannot escape |
What to do when it gets hot
- Stop charging first, then stop the heavy app. Heat falls faster without current flowing.
- Take the case off and move it off soft surfaces. A case traps heat more than most people expect.
- Use a slower charger or a cable without fast-charge support when you need to use the phone for something heavy.
- Let it cool before charging again. Charging a hot phone is the one thing worth actively avoiding.
How to check whether it has cost you anything
Look at Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging:
- Maximum Capacity falling faster than about 1% per month with ordinary use is worth watching.
- Cycle Count (iPhone 15 and later) tells you how much actual use the cell has seen, independent of habits.
- If capacity is dropping fast and the phone gets hot during ordinary charging, suspect the charger, the cable, or heat — not the fact that you used the phone while it charged.
