Battery

Updated 2026-09-16 · Applies to iOS 17 and later

Battery is the only component in an iPhone that is designed to wear out, and it is the most common hidden cause of a "hot and laggy" older phone. Much of the battery anxiety out there comes from misreading the numbers: panicking when health drops to 90%, believing overnight charging ruins the battery, treating normal wear as a defect.

This section builds three mental models:

  1. How to read battery health — dropping to ~85% after two years is within Apple's design range; 80% is the threshold where the system starts limiting performance, and that is the line that calls for action
  2. What actually hurts the battery — heat comes first (especially while charging), followed by long-term storage at full charge; most of the rest is myth
  3. When to replace the battery — the timing, where to go, and what a replacement actually restores

Start with Battery Health Explained, and sort out your charging habits with Why Charging Makes Your Phone Hot — these two things decide how long your battery will last.

Battery Health Below 80%? Why Lag Starts, and When to Replace

A battery is a consumable: new it starts at 100%, and about 85% after two years is normal. 80% is the threshold — below it the system limits performance, bringing lag, heat, and jumps together.

Low Power Mode: How Much It Saves and Whether It Harms

Low Power Mode is a performance limiter, not a power-saving switch: dimmer screen, paused background refresh, no 5G or 120Hz. Apple publishes no percentage, and it does not harm your battery.

iPhone Battery Saving: The Settings That Actually Matter

Battery saving is about three things, in order — the screen, the radio, and background activity. Everything else barely moves the needle.

Battery Health by iPhone Model: Cycle Ratings and What to Expect

Apple rates most older iPhones at 500 full charge cycles to 80% health, and iPhone 15 and later at 1000. Hitting 80% is the replacement line, not a failure.

Fast Battery Drain or Sudden Shutdown in Winter? Cold-Weather Battery Behavior Explained

Winter drain — even a sudden shutdown at 30% — is usually not a broken battery but chemistry: cold slows the reaction and drops the voltage reading, and warming the phone brings it back.

Background App Battery Use: How to Read It, What Is Normal, and What to Turn Off

Read Settings → Battery two ways — by app and by hour. Background work is normally a minority of the day's drain; one app using far more than the time you spent in it is the pattern to act on.

iPhone Battery Calibration: Do You Actually Need To Do It?

You do not need to calibrate an iPhone battery. iOS estimates charge from voltage, current, temperature and history, and re-learns on its own. A monthly full discharge adds cycle wear, not capacity.

How Long Does an iPhone Battery Last? Lifespan, Cycles, and When It Is Worth Replacing

Apple designs an iPhone battery to keep 80% of its capacity after 500 charge cycles, or 1000 on iPhone 15 and later — targets, not a guarantee. Call it two to five years; heat shortens it most.

80% Limit or Full Charge? Pick by How You Actually Use the Phone

Near a charger all day? Cap charging at 80%. Usually end the day under 20%? Leave it off — near-empty is harder on the cell than full. Heat and discharge depth matter more than the ceiling.

Is Using the Phone While Charging Bad? What Actually Causes Harm

Light use on the charger is fine. What ages the cell is heat, so gaming or navigation on a fast charger in a warm place is the combination to avoid — not the act of touching the phone.
