The three things that make it climb

Growth almost always comes from one of these, and they can stack:

  1. The post-update settling period. After an update installs, Spotlight, Photos, Mail and Messages indexes are rewritten, apps generate fresh caches the first time they run, and the installer plus unpacking scratch files sit on disk. Apps holding several GB of cache usually drop most of it when you delete and reinstall them. Confirm anything important is synced first, because removing an app deletes its local data.
