Short answer: standby battery drain after iOS 27 is the charge your phone loses while the screen is off — and in most cases it is not one bug. Background work, a weak cellular signal where the phone sleeps, and a single app waking the radio or the processor are the usual causes. Measure the overnight loss first, then check signal strength, Battery usage and background refresh before you change anything.
A phone that is completely idle still spends power: the cellular radio stays registered with the network, push traffic arrives, and iOS schedules maintenance. So the honest question is not "why does it drop at all" but how fast, and whether that rate changed after you updated.
What standby actually means for iOS
Standby is not a power switch. With the screen off, the phone still has to:
- keep the cellular and Wi-Fi radios registered with the network, so calls and pushes can arrive;
- run scheduled background work — mail fetch, photo analysis, index maintenance, app refreshes;
- handle push notifications through Apple's system-level push service, which wakes the device briefly for each delivery;
- keep system services alive such as Find My, iCloud sync and location-based alerts.
Standby drain is therefore the sum of many small events. When that sum grows, it usually means one of three things changed: more background work, more radio wake-ups, or less efficient power delivery because the battery has aged.
The three usual causes

Notice that only one row is about the update itself. That is the point: an iOS 27 update is a common trigger, but it is rarely the ongoing cause.
Measure before you change anything
Two numbers turn a vague worry into something you can act on.
① The overnight rate. Note the battery percentage right before you sleep, then check it when you wake, and do the same for two or three nights. Consistency matters more than one reading — an 8% loss the night after heavy use is not the same signal as 8% every night for a week on a routine that has not changed.
② The 24-hour list. Open Settings → Battery and read the chart and the app list beneath it. Look for an app whose share of consumption does not match the time you actually spent in it. Ten minutes of use accounting for a third of the day's drain is the pattern worth chasing.

The checks, in order of value
① Signal and Wi-Fi Calling. A weak cellular signal is the most underrated cause of overnight drain, because the radio raises its power to hold the link. In Settings → Cellular, turn on Wi-Fi Calling so calls can route over Wi-Fi where coverage is poor. If you sleep in a room with one bar, this single change often does more than any battery setting.
② Background App Refresh. In Settings → General → Background App Refresh, keep messaging and mail and turn off the rest. This does not delay push notifications — pushes travel over Apple's system-level push service, which is a separate mechanism, as explained in What is Background App Refresh?.
③ Location access. In Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, change apps that do not need live location to While Using, and review anything set to Always. Location is frequently a larger consumer than background refresh.
④ Low Power Mode at night. If you want a tight overnight budget, Low Power Mode is a legitimate tool: Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode. It limits background activity rather than damaging anything, at the cost of delayed background updates — see What is Low Power Mode?.
⑤ Battery health. In Settings → Battery → Battery Health, check maximum capacity. Under 80% iOS begins managing peak performance, and an aged battery simply holds less for the same work. The 80% threshold is explained in What is Battery Health?.
When it is genuinely worth investigating
Treat it as a real problem — not a settling period — when any of these hold:
- more than about 15% lost overnight, on a stable network, after the 72-hour settling window;
- the loss is consistent for several nights and not explained by the Battery list;
- the body stays warm while the screen is off, not merely lukewarm;
- Battery Health is below 80% and the phone also feels slower than it used to.

One closing note: standby drain is not a sign that your phone is failing, and it is not fixed by uninstalling tools of any kind. It is a measurement problem before it is a repair problem — take the two numbers, and the answer is usually visible in the Battery list.
