Bluetooth, Wi-Fi & CarPlay

Updated 2026-10-10 · Applies to iOS 17 and later

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and CarPlay are three names for one problem area: short-range radio links that break in ways the settings screen cannot explain. A device you cannot find, a connection that drops five minutes in, a car that shows nothing at all — each has a physical cause, and each is tested differently.

What this section covers:

  1. Bluetooth — why a pairing record exists at both ends, why the same fault appears once as "will not pair" and once as "keeps dropping", and why audio quality is limited by design rather than by your earbuds.
  2. Wi-Fi — separating "does not appear" from "will not join", what actually causes repeated drops, and why hotel and campus networks refuse a phone that is technically connected.
  3. CarPlay — wired and wireless are different links underneath, which is why "wired works, wireless does not" narrows the problem so sharply.

Start with Bluetooth keeps disconnecting? — it draws the line between a pairing fault and an interference or power-saving fault, which is the split every other article in this section builds on. For version-specific trouble after an update, see iOS 27 Bluetooth issues and CarPlay keeps disconnecting after an update.

Bluetooth Keeps Disconnecting? The Two Problems People Confuse

Will not connect is usually a stale pairing record — delete the device on both ends and re-pair. Keeps dropping is never the pairing: it is interference or a power-saving policy.

Bluetooth Won't Pair or Won't Find the Device? Work Through This

If the device never appears, it is not discoverable — put it in pairing mode. If it appears but will not pair, one end still holds an old key: delete it on both sides before you try again.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Worse Than Wired? What Actually Limits It

Bluetooth audio is always re-compressed for the link, so wired will beat it. If it recently got worse, the suspects are a weak link, a codec downgrade, the source file, or a dirty mesh.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Interfering: How to Tell, and What to Move

Interference has a pattern: drops that cluster in one place or start when you plug something in. Switching Wi-Fi to 5GHz or 6GHz and moving USB 3 gear away fixes more of it than any setting.

iPhone Won't Connect to Wi-Fi? Separate "Sees It" from "Joins It"

A network that never appears is a signal or band problem. A network that appears but will not join is a credential, address or date problem — and Private Wi-Fi Address is the culprit people miss.

Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting on iPhone? Fix the Drop, Not the Network

Drops that follow a pattern are usually the band, a mesh handover, or Low Power Mode. Drops that are random and affect every device point at the router, not the phone.

Private Wi-Fi Address and Captive Portals: Why Hotel Wi-Fi Rejects You

A captive portal needs its login page before the network works. If it never appears, or the network keeps an allow list, fix it on the network’s ⓘ page: sign in, or set Private Wi-Fi Address off.

Wireless CarPlay Not Connecting? What Has to Be True First

Wireless CarPlay is Bluetooth for the handshake and a direct Wi-Fi link for the session. Four conditions must hold at once — and if wired CarPlay works, your phone is already proven.

AirDrop and Personal Hotspot Not Working? Two Links to Fix

AirDrop needs Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on at both ends and a receiving setting that allows the sender. Personal Hotspot needs a carrier-side allowance and the right band, not just a toggle.

CarPlay Not Connecting? Separate the Cable, the Car and Siri

CarPlay will not start until the link, the car's CarPlay mode, Siri and a valid pairing are all in place. The cable is the most common failure and the cheapest to test.
